The USS Ling, a Balao Class sub (the one after the Gato class that the Cod belongs to) is probably laid out similar to the Cod. Main deck, then below that are engineering spaces which contain the forward and aft battery rooms, pump room (filled with lots of pumps, compressors, MG sets etc.) the four engines and their generators in the forward and aft engine rooms go through both the main deck and engineering spaces. Behind the aft engine room is the maneuvering room. Below that are the prop motors and the emergency diesel motor/generator. Below the engineering spaces are fuel and ballast tanks in the bilge. Above the main deck is the conning tower which contains the periscope observing area, fire control computer, and other instruments. A diagram of the Ling is here:

Not really a lower deck, but engineering spaces below the main deck and above the biliges.
I have pictures of those spaces.
I'll see about putting them together and posting them.

Hi Bill
All I can say is "wow" !! Thanks for sharing those pictures.
I was looking at the scale of the people in relation to the ship on the second page of photos, top row middle picture. It looks like the Cod had two decks?
