[ARC5] BC-454-B Power

I agree with Ken, beyond the PITA of the rewiring process, it makes it look
sloppy, even with the best workmanship, and it is completely unnecessary.
Back in the post war days, it was difficult, but quality DC power at just
about any current and voltage level is available and cheap. For example, I
run my TBW on an 800 Hz solid state 700 VA inverter I built from a modified
400 Hz unit, modification consisted of a jumper to change the divider ratio.
I have 24-28 V power supplies coming out of my ears, and no takers, so it's
not like they aren't available. On top of that, try running an ART-13 or
BC-375 on it's dynamotor, and see how magically all the "horrible design
flaws" go away. Besides, pristine examples of these radios are fewer and
fewer. I don't subscribe to the "temporary caretaker" concept, but
responsible stewardship might be a consideration. Then there's the
satisfaction of using an equipment as it was intended.

OK. "stupid" = "completely unnecessary and wasteful. All original type tubes
are available from many sources for very little money. The military had
millions of them made and many of those still exist...except for the
12SF7... And the radios work just fine when configured as they were
originally designed. 24 V supplies are very easy to get or build now"
How's that? A paragraph instead of one word....which means the same thing.
Also, FYI, every single one of the "ARC-5" receivers I presently own have
been hacked, some horribly. I have several BC-453s and/or R-23/ARC-5s hacked
so that they only tune to
23.5 kHz. as an example.
"Back in the day", when cars had 6 V electrical systems, changing the tubes
and rewiriing for
6 V was probably useful sometimes, but that is no longer true.
