When I flew the Radio Ranges in Canada (1960s) I could tell if I was approaching the station or flying away by listening to the signal strength (increasing or decreasing) in about 5 to 10 seconds. I had a Lear 12 ADF which didn’t have agc. Several hundred miles was not unusual to receive a suitable signal. Skip Magnuson W7WGM Spokane, WA
