Guess I am getting old, but I do seem to remember a communications receiver with a 17kHz last IF. The low frequency IF allowed the designers to design filters with sharp skirts with more ordinary components without using crystals or mechanical filters.

The Eddystone 750 receiver has a second IF of 85 kHz. At first I thought, similarly to you,
that this had some basis in the Command Sets receivers, like using surplus IF cans, but
no. In the 750, the IF coupling is mechanically variable.
