On the subject of the S-38: yes, the first S-38 had a real BFO.

MY first "good" receiver was an S-41G which preceded the S-38. The circuits are almost 
identical.

My S-41G was found by a sub-contractor for my step-father's general contracting company in 
the basement of a house he had just moved into. I had to replace the filter cap, and then 
used that thing for a couple of years.

I successfully made many contacts with that piece of junk.

I have another one now and cannot figure out how I even used it.

It was probably because I didn't know any better.
