I worked on ASW (Anti-Submarine Warfare) systems from the late 60's to the
mid 80's. We used a similar principle in the DIFAR sonobuoy system, where we
had an omni sensor device and an E/W and N/S sensor. The Omni was used to
resolve the ambiguity. Multiple buoys with statistical processing could give
a very accurate bearing of a sub. This was a totally passive system. Looking
at doppler, we could also estimate the CPA (Closest Point of Approach) and
speed. This was depicted in the movie Red October. 73 - Mike

Is this strictly true? If the loop is not balanced to ground, has one side
grounded?
Granted, the pattern may be less marked, but it does indicate
directionality.
I feel I vaguely recall an actual commercial application of this fact.
