The R-22 is a very late addition to the A.R.C. Type 12 system. Electrically, it is similar to the A.R.C. Type 12 R-10A receiver with these exceptions:
- The R-22 frequency range is 0.54 to 1.60 MHz. The frequency range of the R-10A and ALL earlier A.R.C.BCB receivers is 0.52 to 1.50 MHz.
- Similar to the R-10A, it lacks a BFO and has provision for a loop antenna.
- Unlike the R-10A which has three power or control connectors on the front panel, the R-22 has only one large power/control connector.
- The A.R.C. control panel C-57 has a dial calibrated .55 to 1.6 MHz for use only with the R-23.
- ALL R-22 units I've ever seen were purchased by the USAF on a 1958 order.
A unit made so late is unlikely to be found in any of the commonly-available A.R.C. Type 12 manuals.
I have a NOS R-22 receiver and D-10A 28vdc dynamotor with the same serial number, and C-57 control panel a few numbers different. I doubt many were made. Why the USAF wanted these in 1958 is a mystery.
