The amusing thing about the ARC-114 and ARC-116 I have is that they are about the same size and weight as a control box for my ARC-27. The ARC-27 does more, with both direct dial-in frequency (depending on the control box) and selected channels and no doubt has more RF power output, but just the main set weighs 80 pounds.
I have found that the ARC-114 has plenty of power output and will transmit into about anything but the ARC-116 only loads into my CB wattmeter with the little screw on dummy load; the RF leakage is enough to allow local tests.
The fact that the two sets need different gain setting for the mike pre-amps makes me wonder how that worked out in the choppers, but I assume there was no problem providing individual fine tuning of mike audio within the intercom system.
I'm told that the Sherriff Dept has the proper VHF/UHF blade antenna for the ARC-116 and that I am welcome to it should I wish to climb up on a UH-1 carcass and remove it. I do not know if that implies an Oh Dark Thirty Operation.
One of the sherriff's pilots told me that the other day they were at one of the county airports and were advised by the tower that there were a couple of F-35's passing through the area at low altitude but that they were on UHF and not VHF and so no one there could talk to them. The pilot wondered if maybe they should have kept some of that old UHF stuff in their choppers.
