FWI if it has not been mentioned, the CQ SSB handbook provides a fairly good description of the BC453 SSB conversion scheme.  The pictures and text are a bit displaced in the book and if memory serves the CQ folks left out the original designer's call letters in many of the included articles>   BTW the tri band home brew SSB transmitter is quite impressive

True (in the best sense of that word), but it was not out of the
ordinary for Ernie Mason, W6IQY who did the technical work and his buddy
Ed Marriner W6BLZ who helped write it up.   Ed was a prolific builder
and author and Ernie designed one SSB transceiver after another,
unfortunately none were documented like this one was.    Anyone who's
interested in homebrew SSB from that era, which often centered around
using surplus parts, might enjoy looking at the three band transceiver
that was designed and built by Ernie a bit after the BC-453 project - a
marvel of compact design!

This rig came to me via Dean Billing, WA6IKJ, who had the excellent
fortune to have been mentored by Ernie, and who built one of the BC-453
rigs while in high school.   But Dean was never sure it worked quite
right and with college and family moves, the rig got lost in the
shuffle.   However, he is thinking about giving it another go!   Dean
made the trip to the W9DYV Symposium at Winterfest in St. Louis back in
January and we presented and displayed the rig shown above.

I've added a couple of photos of happy builders of the BC-453 conversion
to the article to show that despite the complexity it was in fact
successfully done by some number of hams who used them on the air.
Ernie himself built at least four versions, trying out new ideas that
would lead to his scratch-built transceivers.

I've also obtained a very compact all-band mobile transceiver, the only
other known example of Ernie's craftsmanship and will be adding
information about it soon.

73, Bob W9RAN
