Here is a post related to the AN/ARC-2 that I made in 2011:

 https://www.qth.net/pipermail/milsurplus/2011-November/038927.html

I remarked that the author of the "73-Mag" article cited below, Roy Pafenberg/W4WKM (1921-1996), was rather extreme in his many 73-Mag surplus conversion articles, apparently trying to hide much of the original military character as possible. It was however always interesting to see pictures of the equipment BEFORE the conversion.

I didn't read this article until 1968, and I immediately wanted an AN/ARC-2. I finally got one for $50 (about $250 in 2020) plus shipping from Fair Radio in 1975, sent to Idaho Falls ID while I was stationed at the desert Naval Reactors Facility. When I was later stationed near Boston I found in the several surplus electronics outlets there parts to build a 28vdc power supply. I ran the RT-91 completely as designed. I loved how it compared to the R-105/ARR-15 that I got from NAVMARCORMARS in 1969. Both are beautifully constructed.

Yes, Roy was a bit unrestrained in his surplus conversions. Another famous example was what he did to an RT-45/ARQ-1 "Sandy" coumtermeasures set. (It took me 35 years to get one of those...from August Link.)

Roy served as Major, US Army, in WWII and Korea. He passed away aged 75 on 16SEP96 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
