Go a little easy on the author. At the time , there was precious little
information on these rigs, no manuals, schematics, nothing! They also
probably seemed to be available in never ending supply.
I hacked my share of command sets (I had a free source in the form of a C-47
fuselage full of command sets), now they are not so plentiful. I also has a
stash of old Chrysler Hemis from the fifties (probably 50-60 engines), I
eventually scrapped them, as I thought they were dinosaurs, as did everyone
else at the time (in the eighties). As for the AC widow maker PS, plenty of
consumer appliances were built thusly, including cheap welders, tungar
battery chargers, radios, tv's, intercoms, etc.
It was the times, people survived. Maybe the reward was worth the risk.
Maybe, since their life wasn't so complicated, they were more careful. Who
knows?

Thanks, Wayne. An interesting article. I have always had a soft spot for the
ARC-2. To me, it is a technological marvel especially for the time. I own a
complete, untouched, one which I have wanted to get on the air asap. I have
always loved the sound of a dynamotor.
I read the complete article and was not impressed.
I especially thought that power supply was really stupid. Line-connected
power supplies are OK in a drastic life-threatened emergency, but otherwise
should never be used.
