At least some of the plug-ins for the APR-4 and APR-4Y use diode mixers.  Perhaps the lowest frequency ones use a tube, not sure at all.

I wonder what their sensitivity was/is.  I may still have a few of the antennas from the APR-4 system.  They are silver plated.  I assume they were covered by a fiberglas housing on the aircraft (EA-1’s at least).
