Hi Dave, long time, no hamfests eh?    I see the seller has hundreds of
other electronic items up for sale or auction. Wherever it came from,
there was/is a ton of it.  Make that "many tons"...check the sold
listings to see what I mean.

This BC-453 seems to have the usual modifications, control panel and AC
power supply added.    I'd bet the external box is a converter for one
or more HF bands.   There were any number of these but Don Stoner
published two articles, one called the "Novice Q5er":
http://www.w7ekb.com/glowbugs/rx/NoviceQ5er/NoviceQ5er.pdf  and the
other was the "SSB Q5er" which added a product detector. Both took
advantage of the BC-453's excellent narrow passband IF and stable local
oscillator.     Adding a decent converter in front of it and other
features produced a good triple-conversion receiver for little money.

At any rate someone hit the buy it now, as it was sold today. Offering
most anything in the way of vintage radio stuff with free shipping is
bound to get some attention these days.
