Wow. That dude's 12K8 mixer is just lifted into the air, with no ground return, apparently, unless it's the great polar route
somehow through the BC-348. While I'm in a bitching, I give him a couple demerits for small hacks to the 348.

I may get this right, yet.... You couple the signal to the Q-5er not to the antenna but to the mixer grid cap via a small capacitor. Then tune the receiver to roughly 407kHz. My ARC-8 setup was sold and I'm building up another one, now. I can distinctly remember tuning the BC-453 to approx. 407kHz. Sorry for the confusion... The IF offset is, of course 85kHz, not 50......
