Subject: [ARC5] HF/MF Mission Speculations

The device is called "Radio Transmitter Buoy AN/CRN-1."  It has a single tube and is battery powered, operating in the range of 1400 -1750 KC and transmist a CW signal keyed at 180 times a minute and interrupted very 30 sec by a single code letter which may be M, Q, X, K, O, or Y.  Frequency and code letter are set before it is placed in the aircraft

The signal can be picked up from about 50 miels and has been picked up as much as 100 miles.  It transmits for about 12 hours and has timer which will activate it from 0 to 12 hours.  It is deployed by parachute.
