HF aircraft radio continues to this very day.  It was still very active 
outside the U.S. in the 60s.
That said, HF's long service in aircraft is finally in its twilight.  
When we sacrifice enough human lives to the God of Technological 
Advance, maybe they'll rethink casually discarding simpler systems that 
have worked for 100 years.  But I doubt it.
