[ARC5] radio and the Spanish Flu epidermic

KNX was one of two 50KW clear channel stations in LA, the
other being KFI. The original KNX transmitter was in Sherman
Oaks, near what is now the Sepulveda flood control basin. In
1938, when L.A. had terrible floods the transmitter was nearly
flooded out. The engineers had to use rowboats to get to it. So
CBS decided to move and went to Torrance. Torrance was probably a
better location anyway. CBS had bought KNX only a couple of years
before the flood.
Speaking of blanketing I live perhaps a mile and a half from
a site in Echo Park now used by three radio stations. This site
was built in the  1960s for KBLA which became KDAY, a 50KW
daytime only station with six towers pointed mostly at south
central. It is now full time but with reduced power at night.
Call letters are back to KBLA.  Currently two other stations use
the same towers (KHJ and KYPA formerly KGFJ). You can about light
a cigarette by holding it in the air. Someone got a payoff for
the original approval I am sure.
Many stations now are multiplexed onto the towers of another
station because the transmitting sites are now worth more than
the whole station. Locally, KABC is now diplexed onto the towers
of KWKW (formerly KFAC).
