Hi Hue - Well I don't remember much of the details of the setup that I saw
(I was probably 14 at the time) and working to get my Command transmitter
hammered for Novice crystal control at the time (per the 1961 ARRL
Handbook). I'm remembering the receiver being "stock" on 27 mc but maybe I
am just remembering remembering...hihi
An adult High School radio club leader came to our Junior High to "recruit"
some of us into the HS club once we graduated. As an incentive he gave me
(and probably others) a BC-458 to marvel over - and hammer. That's all it
took for me....He was a Navy Chief Radioman assigned to Floyd Bennett Field
nearby - probably had access to lots of surplus radio junk... He had set
up a TDQ and an National NC-303 with an Ameco 2 meter converter at the High
School for us to work as Novices. Good times! The Bug bit hard...Also
taught us CW - a great Elmer..
