Actually the home made masks are for capturing the water droplets that we expel as we breathe or talk or yell or sing, etc. you are correct that they will not snag the virus as it is too small for even the N95 mask to catch. The water droplets carry the virus and homemade masks are effective in catching those droplets. The better homemade masks also have contain a replaceable Coffee filter That makes them a bit more effective and a piece of wire to seal around the nose. You don’t wear these or the N95 masks to protect yourself, but to protect others.
You are correct that these viruses mutate. There have been at least 5 identified in the US so far. We simply don’t know which are the most lethal. I suspect that there are many more mutations out there, some of which may be benign or possibly beneficial. The common cold is also a coronavirus and we don’t seem to get much immunity to it. We get our Flu shots to lessen the severity and suffering that goes with the Flu.
I do wear a mask when I am in a grocery store or other shop as if I can save even one person from suffering from this crap, I will do that. It is out of respect for my fellow humans that I do this. Everyone is welcome to their own views on this, but we should try to keep the facts as scientifically correct as possible. The homemade masks help to stop water droplets that carry these viruses, not the virus itself which far too small.
