Well, the airplanes were buried.  My college professor was there and participated in it. As to why it was so important that the radios not be removed that they sent a General Officer to explain it to him and observe the destruction and burying, I do not know.  But there was a great deal of concern that the many megatons of US surplus equipment left there would destroy any chance of European industry getting back on its feet any time soon.  For that matter, there was great concern in the US; Aviation Magazine described surplus as a "Sword of Damacles."
