Speaking of SEA, there is a book about using airplanes for HF direction
finding in 'Nam. The receivers they carried were R-390As ! with all that
weight and having to produce 115V AC power to run them.
My guess is they didn't use the R-392 nor the aviation version of the
R-390 (I forget it's nomenclature at the moment) because those were all
spoken for to be installed in airplanes and ground mobile stations
already, while the NSA probably had plenty of R-390As they could spare
for the duration.
