I tried to enhance the photos a bit, but only had partial success.
If, as someone else mentioned, it is a control rod, it would have to be operated only under
tension, since it is quite obviously collapsible.
It does look was though it is painted a dark color or was "blued" like a gun barrel.
The device on the left hand end looks like it enabled the rod to be mounted to another piece
of round stock like a pipe.
My first impression was that it was an antenna of some sort, possibly of some sort of
portable set.
As far as it not looking "US issue", there were so many and so varied items issued in military
history that I would not venture to say that.
