Additionally, when the equipment was still relatively new, there wasn't a great concern if you trashed one once in a great while. Parts & new units were easily available. Now that we're sort-of custodians of historical artifacts, there should be more concern about the risks of using likely-to-fail components, especially if they might trigger even more serious damage to unobtainium (e.g., transformer fails, etc.).
