It's not original -true, but GOOD LUCK finding a GOOD T-17 .
If you use the radio, the mike has to be able to modulate the carrier better than 10%, IMO.The original resistance of a T-17 was around 50 ohms. I am yet to find one that measured that low.
Some of the "better" ones might measure several hundred ohms which still doesn't make the cut.
Also, what do you do when the caps are bad? Where do you find GOOD flower pot caps?
I cut mine open and re-stuff them so at least they look like the original as does the mike!
As far a sound goes, I suppose baffling could be constructed to alter the characteristics so that the electret may sound as bad as a carbon.

If it's sounding all so fine and mellow.... it ain't a T-17 anymore. Just 3D print a fake-a-roo and leave the old hardware intact. A T-17 with electret guts seems like those 'tombstone' radios with the cassette player stuck in the side. Abomination. :-D

Subject: [ARC5] Make that Old T-17 Work with BC-456 Got a BC-456 modulator you want to use, but only "dud" T-17 mikes? Yes; in a perfect world, we'd wait and search until we found a "good" T-17. This world ain't perfect. I don't know about you, but the sand in my hour glass is getting a little low, and given the current world situation, I'd kinda like to enjoy my gear before "Ol' Grim" comes to collect me.
So if you're T-17 will so even 10% mod, here's a non-destructive way to change two resistors and get your BC-456 modulator singing for you:
