[ARC5] Make that Old T-17 Work with BC-456

My process is to install the element loosely swaddled in cotton, and stuff it in the shell, the direction is pretty much irrelevant, since the body and front of the T-17 housing determine the directivity. It works FB, I have done several this way, always with the same result. BTW, an electret (in the case of microphone, usually Teflon) is analogous to a permanent magnet, it has a permanent electrical charge, which was originally induced by heating the material, then cooling it, still with the charge applied. Currently the charge is induced with a plasma treatment, or with ion bombardment.

I think what you are describing is a fault in the installation and not anything inherent in the mic element. In fact, electrets are very quiet while carbon microphones hiss, too much breath noise and too much background noise are due to installation method. same with RFI. Virtually all telephones, cell phones, computers, etc, now use electrets. They are essentially condenser microphones with a permanent charge. They are simple and very rugged. Carbon microphones were once the mainstay of the telephone system. Widely used because a carbon microphone is also an amplifier so, at the time that amplification was expensive, carbon mics were ideal. However, electrets are superior in virtually every way so carbon mics are now quite rare.
