This same B-17 was scheduled to come to my town in New Jersey next week, and I was planning to go down and check it out.
The last time I went to one of these war bird tours, there was a WWII vet who came out of the B-17 with tears in his eyes. The last time he had been in one was in 1943, when his plane was shot down over Europe.

Elements of truth in most of the posts, I think. I've been in and around aviation since 1959 when I got initiated to aerial flight in a CAP L-5. I've been involved in airframe and avionics maintenance and operations since 1961 (how wonderful for me). Been an aircraft owner up until last year. My only claim to vintage fame is about 58 legal logged hours in C-47 and C-53 aircraft, and a hop in a Ford Trimotor. I hope the NTSB can discover the actual reasons/ causes for this accident. I was not aware that the USAF and FAA were pushing for grounding, but not surprising. The Interior Dept. cancelled all contracts employing vintage water bombers in the 1990s owing to poor safety (read: crash) records. Static displays do not confer the same effect as a real fly-by. Let's just hope reason prevails, if that's even possible, anymore. Jeep K3HVG

Only if built right!
Have you ever flown, or flown in, a WW II era aircraft? My plane was built in 1947 and was basically WW II technology in a civilian light plane. I learned to fly in 1980s aircraft. It was a totally different experience when I stepped into my 1947 plane. If you haven't experience it, you don't understand it, and you won't understand it by just looking inside with it sitting on the ground.
I appreciate your perspective and thoughts Mike, but I have to disagree. If someone invests their legally earned money into makiing a B-17 fly, they have the right to do with their property what they desire (as long as its legal).

Such simple assertions are always incorrect.
Are submarines made to submerge?
I'm very happy that historical WWII boats never do that (even though I was a submarine officer more than 45 years ago). We don't have old former submariners or their wannabes taking 75 year old fleet boats out with a bunch of high-paying passengers for a day cruise and a dive.
Perhaps it's time for owners to exercise similar prudence with old military aircraft. There is much more value to the continued existence of a historic aircraft as a display than as a vehicle for in-flight jollies, giggles, and grins. A non-flying display could show the historical original without accommodations to 21st Century airworthiness and paying customers.
