OK, at the risk of going overboard, I will share with you my secret for heating set screws. I used to use a soldering iron, but I tend to be impatient, so it made a work coil for my induction heater that is a 1 ¼’ ID 3 turn coil of 12 AWG enameled copper I place it around the knob (plastic, bakelite, or even aluminum), and about 3 seconds is all it take to turn the setscrew red. Let it cool a bit, and it comes right out. You can buy cheap little switch mode induction heater kits on ebay for 15-20 bucks, they run well from a 24 VDC supply. I have a more elaborate induction heater , but the cheap ones work FB.

It was a humorous rhetorical question, Scott. :-)

Hah, hah, Mike. I never considered the composition of the knob on which I used the described procedure. There is no real heat setting on those small torches, other than noting the flame itself. Regardless, it has always worked for me on the knobs with which I had an issue otherwise. 73 – Mike

Hi Dave –
I have found that heat always work. This is even if Loctite was used. Once the appropriate wrench is found and doe not do the job by itself, apply heat. When I run into a tough one, I plece the wrench into the screw and secure the handle with long nose pliers. After that I apply heat from a small torch for a few seconds and out comes the screw. 73 – Mike
