Probably could line the ears with felt sheet. It comes with an adhesive backing and is cheap at Lowe’s or Home Depot. Just trim it to fit. Comes in black, green, and brown colors.
I use it for many things where I’m concerned about scratching a surface.

I bought a couple of the test equipment thingies from Fair Radio years ago, IIRC, but after one use with an older, somewhat beat up transmitter, I bequeathed them to someone for the same reason that several have commented on here - those doggone ears scratch the paint or aluminum, even with judicious bending. I half-way considered lining the offending edges with teflon or something similar, but that seemed a waste of valuable time.
Now...I'll have to admit that I never met a hacked command set rack I didn't like, if it was cheap enough, if only for hardware bits. I finally looked through my pile-o-junk racks from hamfests and found three pieces (two transmitter and one receiver) that would do the job of test racks for the whole ARA/ATA, SCR-274N, and AN/ARC-5 series. Attached is a photo of the one for the AN/ARC-5 transmitter. The "awk" moment occurred later - after I noticed (because of the two unpainted outer sides), that this had been the center section hack-sawed out of an MT-73/ARC-5 triple transmitter rack! Talk about "wish he hadn't done that..." <ack2.gif>
The original racks aren't the easiest to keep from scratching sets either, but at least the tx/rx baseplate clearance keeps the scratches to a minimum, and the two tabs on the upper rear part of the rack can be removed to solve that piece of the problem.

Probably in that back aisle where my son, granddaughter and I found the hoard of BC-450As the day before we went to Xenia this year. Interestingly, that's also the aisle where our Radiation Pagers would not stop alarming...? Could not ID the source(s) of the radiation - no doubt there are multiple Radium paint sources back there. Ah, the Good Old Days...

Youcan get a used raw rack connector from Fair radio, but you have call and ask for Phil. He has some in the back room somewhere.
