[ARC5] Capacitor Tests

I tried Rich's test this morning. I first charged up the electrolytic cap to its max voltage or a substantial portion thereof. Then I hooked up the Harbor Freight digital VOM (free when you buy a small package of heat shrink tubing) with its positive lead to the power supply and its negative lead to the + terminal of the cap.

The junk caps that hold a charge very well showed an initial voltage of around 0.03 on the meter. The junk cap that does not hold a charge quite as well showed an initial voltage of 0.07. The Mallory NOS cap that does not hold charge very well showed about 1.5 to start out and the Mallory NOS cap that does not hold a charge very well showed an initial reading of 7.7 increasing to about 26. All caps showed an increase in reading over time as they sat there, hooked to the power supply and the cheap digital VOM.

So I conclude that Rich's test is a good indication of leakage and correlates well to observed behavior in terms of holding a charge.

Thanks!
