As y'all know I have been working on a GRC-9 receiver that has been stripped of a number of its vital components, including the IF transformers and BFO coil. I decided to build the solid state replacement for the 1R5 converter tube, using the design I got off the Internet years ago.
I built the 1R5 replacement, inserted it in the V-2 socket and applied low voltage DC through the 330K resistor that is in the line feeding pin 3 of the tube. Using my Tek 2236 scope I got some squiggles when I changed bands on the set but no real oscillation indicated. I decided to try a real 1R5 tube with the appropriate filament and B+ voltages. But first this morning I saw that the manual for the set shows the normal voltage at pin 3 of V-2 is only 45 VDC. I have not even checked to see what the normal B+ supply is for the receiver but obviously that 330K resistor is killing a lot of voltage.
I left the IR5 solid state replacement in the socket, moved my low voltage DC power input to after the 330K resistor, and set it to 12VDC.
And there is the LO! Strong and stable, putting out probably 1.5VDC and only a little bit of instability down around 1KHZ or less
Therefore I assume that the solid state tubes are designed to operate using the normal HV B+ supply for the receiver without further modification of the set..
My solid state tube is not a thing of beauty but it works! Pictures on request.
