[ARC5] SCR-274N side tone level?

A normal Command Set installation would have the receiver and transmitter control boxes near the pilot (and copilot), not the radio operator (if any). The volume control of the receiver or receivers is the RF gain control which is located on the Control Box. Which of course has no effect on the side tone circuit level. The only way to reduce the audio side tone level without modifications would have been with an interphone control box of some sort that the head set(s) plugged into. In use, you would set the side tone level with the volume control on the interphone box and then adjust the RF gain control on the receiver control box. Why there isn’t a side tone level control somewhere in the system I don’t know.

Subject: [ARC5] SCR-274N side tone level?

I run a stock SCR-274N setup with a BC-456 modulator not sure if this is normal, but the side tone in CW, and phone is ear piercing I can't even wear my headphones its so loud. Is there a simple way to lower the level? So far I haven't seen in the manual any mention of level adjustment. Guess I understand why its loud the radio dude needed to be able to hear the radio during flight, but dang this is ridiculous.
