This reminds me of a BC-639 VHF receiver my friend Greg Schilling had back in the early 1990s. He had it on a variable B+ supply.
Above a certain "sweet spot" B+ setting, smoke would pour from the thing, but when set below that point, it would work fine, 
apparently endlessly. Unfortunately, one day his house burned, caused by a defective power head to the house, and then the 
BC-639 was for once and forever, royally smoked, toast. Unfortunately also, Greg was saving money by not having insurance on 
his house. 
If the BC-348 caps leak, it would bother me to no end. I would HAVE to change them and I would feel restless until I got it done.
