But with 'standard' tubes the achievable gain falls off at 28 volts.
The R-808 / GRC-14 rec manual says this is why the receiver has 2 RF and 3 IF, because stage gain is lower with 28 volts. Like the R-392, it uses 6AJ5.

Note that the various BC-1206 receivers all work on 28VDC B+ and filament voltage, as does the R-392, and numerous tube type marker beacon receivers, including the BC-357, BC-1033, and R-666.
