That is the $64 question. An awful lot is predicated on GPS, these days,
both enroute and terminal for aviation and location info for millions of other
users. The VOR and ILS systems are still in wide use and are still virtually
the primary approach and landing system. In times of National duress, GPS can
and will be turned off or at least offset with corrections known only to a
select group. Of course, in the 50's when the Adcock ranges were being shut
down, the same question was raised. As you probably recon, navigating in East
Coast airspace without GPS, using only paper charts, can be "occupying", if
single pilot. I'd not like to operate within the DC area SFRA without GPS but I can do it with reasonable viz.
I'm sure I've been, in part, spoiled. But many have grew up in the olde tymes
and still do it that way, at times.....hi!! But, I'll tell you what... there
are newer pilots that can't do it without the new technology. Now, throw in
ADS-B!!
