J: Doing restorations there is accuracy and then there is ACCURACY!  The
guys who do ACCURACY, go to the n'th degree...down to having AN hardware
made up with the correct Type 1 Silver Cad plating, and so on. I go for
accuracy, but can't afford to drop kilobucks on things like having
hardware runs with the correct plating, or even having custom sheet mill
markings done on the sheet metal.

Where I compromise is safety items and things that are visible. Worked
on an L-5 for a friend and he spent almost a year tracking down and
buying all the Type 1 Cad plated AN hardware he could find for the
project. It all got installed where it was visible, and regular Type 2
Cad hardware where it wasn't, or would on and off often. Much of the
Type 2 stuff got painted to look like Type 1. Brakes were another area
we compromised. He had a couple of sets of original expander tube  brake
sets we used for the initial installation, but after the 2nd tube
failure due to age, he relented and went with modern brakes.

One of the things I'm looking at, is getting set up with a braider to
overbraid my wiring for the airplane. Lots of it is visible, so would be
a good item to do. I've got to dig thru my parts pile for the Fairchild
and find a couple of wires that haven't had the cotton rot off so that I
can figure the thread count and start looking for a decent maypole
braider and bobbin winder.  I'll use modern wire and overbraid with
either Nomex or Kevlar thread, of the correct color so that it will look
right.

I'm also waiting on some photos from another restorer of some inspection
stamps from Fairchild from the correct time period. I've got a couple of
Bellanca ones on some of my parts, but as my airplane was the 2nd build
by Bellanca, I know some parts at that point came from Fairchild.

All in all, it's both frustrating and fun at the same time chasing parts
and information for these projects.
