This may be what he meant by a messenger wire. Would have to
be something really stiff like a piece of a clothes hanger. Might
be possible to pick the seams out and resew them. Hobby shops who
carry leather craft stuff will have both the needles and thread.
I got familiar with this from repairing old camera cases.
