     Funny to think that both KNX and KFI were out in the sticks 
when built. At the time the regulations required that stations 
not "blanket" the surrounding area so high power stations were 
not located in the city.
     KNX had a vertical radiator at its old location, given as 
Sherman Oaks but actually near the present Sepulveda flood 
control basin. The Torrance site also had a full half-wave 
vertical and an RCA 50D transmitter (sort of a copy of the 
Dorherty). KFI had a big flat top until about 1948 when it was 
replaced with a half-wave vertical. Their publicity at the time 
said it increased their coverage by 35%.
     These were and are the only "unlimited" 50KW stations in the 
city, others must either reduce power or become directional at 
night or both.
