Funny to think that both KNX and KFI were out in the sticks
when built. At the time the regulations required that stations
not "blanket" the surrounding area so high power stations were
not located in the city.
KNX had a vertical radiator at its old location, given as
Sherman Oaks but actually near the present Sepulveda flood
control basin. The Torrance site also had a full half-wave
vertical and an RCA 50D transmitter (sort of a copy of the
Dorherty). KFI had a big flat top until about 1948 when it was
replaced with a half-wave vertical. Their publicity at the time
said it increased their coverage by 35%.
These were and are the only "unlimited" 50KW stations in the
city, others must either reduce power or become directional at
night or both.
