>I can't tell you the number of folks who have approached me, and others,
to get their gear going

I've repaired linear amps for people in our radio club. As soon as I
started doing that other clubs in the area got wind of it and i started
getting emails.

I quickly decided I wasn't going to hang my shingle out as I'd have been
inundated. Kind of harsh, but I am not retired and I have little enough
time to work on my own projects let alone projects for others. I will
gladly help my friends, but not enough runway in life for others. Maybe
when I retire......

It's not uncommon for me to get emails from people that have visited my web
site asking if I can fix their (name it) radio as I've worked on them.
They have no problem shipping it to me. The answer is of course "no". I
always reply that I'll be glad to give them "tech support" via email or
landline while they work on their radio, and if we run into a problem I'll
put them in touch with others that can help. Rarely do I ever get a
response to that offer.
