knew they had the code, and they also had some captured equipment they
could home in with."

The above referenced VF-10, USS Enterprise, at the Battle of Santa Cruz in
October 1942

Another possibility was the altitude.  YE/ZB needed altitude commensurate
with distance to the carrier to be effective;  I have a few books that
mention this with altitude numbers but can't get to them right now.
