I think David Stinson's response is probably the simplest and will satisfy
my friend since it does not get into the complexities of navigation and
command receivers fitted side by side, nor the other exotic combos. What
neither of us appreciated was that the two audio outputs could be commoned,
in addition to being switched from one to the other.
I'm grateful to those who responded, and especially for the comprehensive
explanations offered by the regular experts on these sets, which will no
doubt satisfy my friend if he really wants to get involved in the minutiae
of it all. Thanks gents.
