[ARC5] Silver dial?

On the cap replacement:
This was “standard” post-war refurbishment for the RCAF.

Quite a few of these around, though this is the first one 

I’ve seen where they repainted the dial.  Given the 

service most of these saw before going to RCAF, that 

some of them would need repainting not surprising.

 

I’m in the camp that says the dial was depot-refurbed,

probably at the same time as the cap job.

It may be as simple as “we were out of black paint.”

Nothing but speculation available to us.

 

As for the X-15 project- lit my science fires as a boy.

One of the first models I built.  We know with certainty

that the Bell X-1 carried AN/ARC-5 VHF, so who can say?

“Speculating:” by the time of the X-15, much lighter 

Beacon Band alternatives to the BC-453 with dynamtor

were available at that time.  I’d bet there’s a build-out

with photos of the radios in the X-15 on some dusty

shelf somewhere.
