[ARC5] [Milsurplus] FT: FT-226-A

There are a few viable substitutes for the 18-pin connectors between the MD-7 and either C-29 or C-30/ARC-5. Connectors used with ARA/ATA, SCR-274-N and AN/ARC-5 are keyed or oriented by the contact arrangement. Connectors use with the A.R.C. Type 12 have added alignment keys on the cable connector and keyways on the chassis connectors. By grinding off the key on the cable connectors, the 6, 8 and 19 pin Type 12 connectors (there are several different numbers of each insert) will fit the 6, 8 and 18 pin AN/ARC-5 chassis connectors. With any of the 19-pin connectors, you must plug Pin A and figure out the conversion from pin letter to pin number. But once wired, it will work. The Type 12 connectors mostly have ahole and grommet through the back shell instead of either a plate with one hole for each pin or a solder gland. The grommet can be replaced with a solder gland. I don’t know of anyone who ever went to the trouble to make the holey plate.

With minor modifications, the BC-451-A can also be substituted for the C-29/ARC-5.

Good luck. The MT-71/ARC-5 is quite a lot rarer than the FT-226-A. Even more so is the connector that is on both ends of the cable from the MT-71 to the MD-7/ARC-5. The connector used on the cable from the MD-7 to the C-30A/ARC-5 (often used instead of the very rare C-29/ARC-5 even if there are no VHF components in the system) is rare as well.
