It will work with any receiver that covers the same frequency range as 
the DU-1 , 200kHz to 1.6MHz.  See http://aafradio.org/docs/DU-1.html for 
details.  The R-23 would only cover the lower part of the DU-1's 
operational frequency range.

It isn't a receiver per se - think of a tuned preselector with a 
capability of also choosing an integrated loop antenna and/or an 
external single wire or whip  antenna.  When used together with the 
loop, the wire antenna becomes what is known in DF terms as the sense 
antenna, and provides an unambiguous compass direction to a transmitter.
