If you look at the licensing label on the tuning section cover for an ARC R-11A you will find that the set is "Licensed Only for Radio Goniometry Purposes."   Gordon White says this was because ARC had developed certain innovative circuits that it then licensed to RCA for uses other than direction finding purposes.

So if you listen to something other than an NDB with that R-11A there will one day be a knock at the door and some humorless men will take you away.  They'll almost undoubtedly also check to see if you tore that little tag off your mattress.

I took the tuning cover off mine.
