One possibility is to use a small loop on a hand held
broadcast receiver. I think you can still buy them. The loop is
directional and will help find the noise source. Its helpful if
you have a receiver with adjustable RF gain but few battery sets
do. The noise may come from many sources but its character may
help to determine what it is. Could be anything from fluorescent
lights to plasma displays. If on the power line you may be able
to see it on an oscilloscope. Power line noise can also be
radiated over large distances by power lines. Can also come from
street lights, does it come on in the evening?
If you have a battery operated radio that hears it try
shutting off the power at the main switch (may not be possible if
there is a whole church on it).
A cure depends on the source. Ferrite beads can help filter
it if its coming from the power main but not if its radiated
noise. A balanced antenna can help.
There is an enormous amount of electrical noise now,
sometimes very hard to track down. Power companies used to offer
help but I don't know if they do any more.
I have not done a web search for sites with samples of
different kinds of noise but I am sure there are some, maybe You
Tube.
