Clever!  I recall back circa 1977, a friend of mine, a highly experienced electronics technician, was trying to get up to speed on TTL.  He asked me if there was an easy way to find a bad one.  I told him to feel the chips and see if one was hot.  He later found a recommendation in a book that said just that.

Of course, with electron tubes, if it ain't hot that's an indicator, too.
