contesting is not my thing either. But I find the contests useful to test receiver and what I can hear.
The current solar cycle is near the bottom. So I don't hear much anymore.
I get the impression the that 20M contesters high power, large antennas, and COMPUTERS!

Spend hours dupe checking a paper log with 800+ QSO's and producing a contest summary......or click and send.....

While I'm still comfortable sending with my right hand and writing a log with my left....typing in calls beats all... and no glass arm the next day...

That?s why I?m running a CE 20A/600L and Halli receivers of late , with the factory converted T-20/ARC-5 VFO, while my Yaesu FT-100D is OOC, probably permanently.

If you are in an area that has a fair number of contesters, then a lot of the solid-state equipment goes "belly up" and the tube type gear keeps rolling along!? "Front end" overload!
Actually, with equipment like the Collins S-Line or Heath SB-Line, and with appropriate CW filters, tube type equipment can keep right up with the "modern" equipment and, usually, with a cleaner signal!?

They did and they do. As I just told Jim, I corrected the error the next
day but there is no way on a reflector to un-ring the bell.

I have the same impression. I read something recently about
how these batteries were assembled but don't remember where.
Maybe on the web. However a google search for lantern batteries
turned up

both D and F cells.

which has dimensions. F cells are about half way down.
