One doesn't have to keep a paper log during contests when using tube-type equipment.

For every day operation, I definitely still keep a paper logbook.  However, during contests, I definitely use a computer log for any number of reasons including the automatic "dupe" notification.  When the contest is over, I print out a copy of the log and put that copy in my "regular" logbook.

If one wants to use the computer for things like keying the transmitter, there are a number of simple interfaces that can be built that allow such.  Yes, that does require a little more effort than just plugging in a cable between the computer and the rig.  However, the end result is still the same!

I used a lot of tube gear in various contests, seperates, amps with plug in coils, S-lines, etc.
BUT,  contest software and  a rig connected to a computer....is the difference between working a contest and enjoying one.
Spend hours dupe checking a paper log with 800+ QSO's and producing a contest summary......or click and send.....Band maps, spotting, one click band change.
While I'm still comfortable sending with my right hand and writing a log with my left....typing in calls beats all... and no glass arm the next day...
