If you are in an area that has a fair number of contesters, then a lot of the solid-state equipment goes "belly up" and the tube type gear keeps rolling along!  "Front end" overload!

Actually, with equipment like the Collins S-Line or Heath SB-Line, and with appropriate CW filters, tube type equipment can keep right up with the "modern" equipment and, usually, with a cleaner signal!
