You might try looking on TOP of something down there, rather than on the floor.

I once dropped an "important" screw from a gun I was working on. 

After several HOURS of looking for the darned thing, I finally found it on TOP of a small 
ledge just under a cabinet door. The ledge was 1/2" wide, and the "slot" through which the 
screw had flown was 1/4" tall.

Screw-gremlins, and probably knob-gremils, DO exist!!!
